In the "Landi Kotal" region which is a military camp in Pakistan, there is a tree chained from everywhere as if it prevented them from escaping, in addition to a plaque hung on one of its branches reading: "I am under arrest"!
What is the secret of the detained tree in Pakistan?
This tree raised many questions about why it was bound by chains, and it was the focus of the attention of visitors and tourists. The story of the tree dates back to 1898, when the British officer James Squid believed, under the influence of alcohol, that the tree was moving from its place and ordered the soldiers' squad to arrest her. The soldiers obeyed the orders of the officer and tied the tree with chains that still surround it to this day more than 100 years later!
As for the reason that she remained tied throughout this period, because the British wanted to deliver a message to the people that their fate was like a tree if a tribe dared to take action against the British Raj at that time.
The locals regard the tree as a symbol of the unjust laws enacted by the British colonies during the colonial era to counter the opposition and the people. These laws allowed the government to carry out collective punishments for tribes and families who had been identified as joining the opposition. Oddly enough, these laws are still in effect in some FATA tribal areas in northwest Pakistan.
