Cartoon Nils is an integral part of many people's childhood, and one of the beloved cartoon characters with his helpful stories. Nils, a young boy whose magical monster transformed from his natural size to a very small size because of the constant abuse of animals, became accompanying the "goose" Morten who lives on the farm, where he accompanies her on her journeys with a crowd of emigrating geese and coexists with her on a fun trip.
It all sounds interesting, like the cartoon series, but what is the relation of the "Nils" series with the Swedish currency? The cartoon image was printed on the Swedish 20 kroner coins on one side and on the other side a picture of the Swedish novelist and writer Selma. This looks strange as a choice for a photo printed on a national banknote! So why did Sweden choose a cartoon for children to put on its national currency?
Why was the choice on the "Nils" cartoon to be printed on Sweden's national currency?
The cartoon series "Nils" was produced between 1980-1981, the first work produced by the Japanese studio company Peru, which achieved success, contrary to expectations! The series, which consists of 52 episodes, is based on the international novel "The Amazing Adventures of Nils" by Swedish writer Selma lagerlöf, which won the Nobel Prize in Literature for her novel that has been translated into many languages and has a very interesting story.
"Nils" and Swedish geography!
Despite Sweden's enchanting nature, the students' apprehension of the geography of their country was not satisfying. Despite the value of the subject of geography, but the students were affected by this subject was weak, which angered officials in education and searched for many solutions to this disturbing and frustrating phenomenon.
After trying several solutions, the teacher “Selma” was chosen to turn geography into a fun material that would be attractive to children. Instead of a boring and gloomy book, Selma took it upon herself to re-write the book of geography by introducing passion among its lines, and taking students on a journey through it to the various landmarks of the homeland.
After thinking about the best way to attract children to learn and love geography, the answer was from Selma's point of view that she chose a fictional character in the new book that takes children with her on a fun geographical journey. Selma has worked on her book for 6 years since it was assigned to her in 1900, and she produced a literary masterpiece that she called "Nils Holgersson's Wonderful Journey Through Sweden."
The book, officially published in 1906, was loved by adults before the kids and had a great impact on students, parents, and even neighboring countries. The book has been translated into 12 languages and an animated film has been produced.
To honor her and celebrate her efforts, the politicians decided to put the image of the writer "Selma" and her perfect work on the image of Sweden's 20 kronor currency, which still today bears the same image.
